Some of our customers have very kindly sent in reports about how the magazine looks on Apple's iPad. Jim Richards from Wisconsin says, "The PDFs display very nicely. I did run it through a pub[lication] conversion utility. This had mixed results, but all in all was pretty nice. The package I used is called Calibre, and is a free/donation ware piece of software. They have presets for many of the popular E-book platforms, but none optimized for the iPad yet, but I am sure one will be coming in the near future." Thank you, Jim! See here for a full list of E-book converters.

Joshua Burnstone says: "You may already be aware of this, and in any case I suspect not many of your readers will ever come across this problem, but I thought I would e-mail you anyway particularly as there appears to be a simple solution! Having bought the PDF copies of Battlegames so I could put them on my new iPad I noticed that there was a problem with issues 18 through 21 not showing any pictures, only text, in both the native iBooks PDF reader on the iPad and the commercial alternative Goodreader. Some investigation on the internet revealed this as a problem quite a few people were having with PDFs from various publishers. It seems the problem may be associated with transparency layers or perhaps the iPad's limited ability to display certain picture formats, but no one seems to have quite worked it out as of yet and there is currently no fix from Apple. There is a simple solution though, for Mac users anyhow. By simply opening the troublesome PDFs in Preview on my Mac, and then going to File-> Save As..., and saving them with just the default options, they become fully viewable on the iPad, pictures and all. The one drawback is that by resaving the file in Preview, the file size appears to increase quite a bit, but until Apple updates the PDF viewing capabilities of the iPad this may be the best solution."

Subscriber Jim Getz says simply: "I just download using an app called GoodReader and start reading! No conversion necessary."

Subscribe to the PDF version of Battlegames here

Battlegames war games magazine issue 25 coverJust want a digital subscription to the magazine? Then you've come to the right place. As each new bi-monthly issue is published, you will be sent an email containing a link to a members-only page on our website where you can download your PDF copy of the magazine.

All new subscriptions start with the next issue to be published, i.e. NOT the current issue shown on our home page and here. Re-subscriptions will begin with the next issue in sequence based on our database records of your existing subscription. You can re-subscribe or extend your subscription at any time — we will automatically tag your new subscription onto the end of your previous one, unless you request otherwise. You can give additional instructions during the PayPal process, e.g. to re-subscribe from a particular issue. See example here.

NB Please note that our subscriptions are for a full year (six issues). We thank purchasers for respecting copyright laws and supporting our small company.

Note: for technical reasons, the stand-alone digital subscription must be purchased separately and cannot at present be added to your shopping cart with printed or other digital issues.

If you're new to Battlegames, this massive collection is the perfect way to bring you up-to-date with the magazine and also to get additional entertainment from our famous Table Top Teasers series by Brigadier Charles S Grant. In this first volume, we celebrate that heritage by reproducing the very first Teaser that was ever printed back in Battle for Wargamers in 1978, together with the first twelve of the Battlegames Teasers and, following a discussion of the use of historical battles as the basis for scenarios, a brand new Teaser based on the Peninsular War battle of Roliça.

In addition, there are contributions from well-known wargamers who have adapted and re-fought some of the Teasers themselves, delivering entertaining and informative accounts accompanied by a host of colour photographs. With several brand new maps, extra photos and additional material, there’s something here for every wargamer serious about having fun.
