This series
of photos tells the story of how I prepared my Regiment von Eintopf for battle
in the days leading up to our staging the battle of Sittangbad from
"Charge!" at Partizan in May 2006. These are all original and very old plastic
Spencer Smith miniatures, dating back to the 1970s in some cases.
The first
job was to trim off all the flash with a fine scalpel, wash the figures
in detergent, and then leave them to soak overnight in a very dilute solution
of vinegar.
Doing this helps to dissipate the detergent which can affect paint adhesion,
and secondly microscopically 'etches' the surface of the plastic, giving
a better 'tooth'
on the surface which again improves the ability of water-based paint to
adhere.
Finally, a coat of thinned PVA adhesive (white glue) is applied and left to dry. It is important to allow sufficient time for this to dry completely before going further.
